Flash Traffic Priority Transmission: Why Don’t You Do Right?

Here’s Jessica’s famous performance of the song Why Don’t You Do Right? from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?  Although Jessica was voiced by Kathleen Turner, the vocal performance of the song is by actress Amy Irving.

The film version of Jessica Rabbit was based on a lot of different classic film actresses, most notably Veronica Lake.

The song Why Don’t You Do Right? was written in 1936 by Kansas Joe McCoy and was recorded by his band the Harlem Hamfats.  The song was originally called Why Don’t You Do Now, but after the initial recording, McCoy rewrote the song with all new lyrics and changed some of the composition and retitled the song.  It was recorded by Lil Green in 1941.  Probably the best known version of the song is Peggy Lee’s 1942 version with Benny Goodman.  It sold over a million copies and brought her nationwide attention.

Other artists who have recorded the song include Ella Fitzgerald, Della Reese, Johnny Otis, Mel Torme, Ashlee, Simpson, Sinead O’Connor, and Casey Abrams is the 10th season of American Idol.  The song is also featured on the soundtrack of Fallout New Vegas.
